This morning I woke up and heard an audible sound which repeated the phrase, “Take the ball and wait a minute, take the ball and wait a minute, take the ball and wait a minute…” I listened closer and closer trying to figure out where the voice was coming from. It was the voice of an older male not much older than I. The more I listened the clearer it became until it finally dissipated all together. My first thought was that there was a TV on in the house. Then I thought perhaps the kids were up playing video games. Maybe it was a voice coming from outside. None of these things were occurring. Everyone was quietly asleep in the house.
Guess what? It was a voice from outside. It would seem that what happened was that Spirit had put the songs of the birds together to create a master work. As musicians have done for years the varying songs of many instruments, in this case the varying songs of each bird, were brought together to create a symphony. Through many parts of the composition a symphony is created and the work is able to communicate the intended messages and emotions to the listener.
I recall my first experience with this. As a child I played in the concert band at school. Different pieces would be handed out by Mr. Drummond for each player. In the clarinet section alone there were three different pieces used to create the sections sounds or parts of the composition.
We would go home and practice for hours on end just to get our parts right. The biggest issue I took with this was that my part sounded like nothing. The music did not speak to me at all. It seemed to be just a series of unrelated random notes that I would have to count out and play over and again. That would all change when we came together in practice.
Once the band began to learn their individual parts things began to change. At first it was a little ruff and kind of difficult to appreciate what had been composed by the artist. However, over time all those random notes began to come together. It was a highly emotional experience sitting amidst all the other members and finally understanding the intention of the composer.
This is how Spirit created the message which I received on this morning. You see, I woke up in time for church, but something was telling me to wait. Although I was looking forward to worship, it felt as if I should not go. After wrestling with this for a while I decided to pour a cup of coffee and wait to make my decision.
Just as I had finished drinking my last drop my phone rang. It was my cousin Stephen. He was very upset and needed to talk to me. It turned out that some family issues had created a multitude of problems in his life. Related to this he was rejected by his family, fired from his job and forced out of his home. He was not in his happy place.
I’m not sure exactly what that message was telling me. The birds sung all their individual songs which came together to create a single composition. It was a symphony of sounds. It lasted for only a few minutes, but maybe that was all that was needed. My experience has taught me that there are no coincidences. I know that the meaning of the rest of the message will come to me when it is time or maybe it already has.
There are incredible things coming over the horizon. We must be ready for them. We must receive God’s gifts and use them to their greatest potential. We must keep our eye on the proverbial ball. The exchange must be made – our will for the will of God.

The amazing thing about this was that we began our conversation at 10:48 am and ended it 23 minutes later. It was 11:11 when the conversation ended. He felt better and so did I. It could be that the birds were being used to let me know that I needed to wait a minute before I rushed off to church. Could the ball have been symbolic of the mission that the Creator has given me? I was asked to hold the ball.
When we have a ball it is usually part of a game. In football it is our job to get the ball down the field in order to score. Could this be symbolic of the journey that I am on? I think that is the case. Sometimes we need to take a time out, get into a huddle and realize our next move. This message was telling me just that. “Take the ball and wait a minute.” It was just Spirit letting me know that there was something else It needed me to do before I continued my run down the field.
“It is in Spirits time, as the plays are set, that we will achieve the intended goal.” (Ron Ash)
